Remote Control ER

Talk about “reach out and touch someone”. You’ve heard stories about future surgeries being done by doctors that are located elsewhere? We’ll it’s been done.

The procedure consisted of removing the gall bladder of a patient in Strasbourg, France. From New York, the surgeons controlled a robotic system manufactured by Computer Motion, Inc, to operate on the patient. The link between the surgeons and the robotic system was an end-to-end high-speed fiberoptic service provided by the France Telecom Group. Members of the media are invited to view excerpts from the procedure and statements from the principals.
