Undercity.org

June 29th, 2004 No comments

Undercity.org is a celebration of New York City and all cities. A city is a pulsing and active organism, full of life; like life, a city is complex with many layers and many hidden meanings. Like a living being, a city does not willingly reveal its complexity and secrets to any random stranger. In order to find these secrets and understand them, you must be intimate with the city, dedicated, open to exploration, and courageous.

One of the better Yahoo Sites of the Day I’ve seen in a while.

Seinfeld & Superman: Hindsight

June 26th, 2004 No comments

The Dynamic Duo is back for round two of the American Express ads. Head over to The Adventures of Seinfeld & Superman and click on the “Hindsight” canister on the foreground table.

(If you haven’t seen it, check out “Uniform” before you watch “Hindsight”, as the first is referenced a few times in the second.)

Oh, Yes, Wyoming!

You Are The Bow Man

June 10th, 2004 No comments

If you can figure out that the game requires you to shoot you opponent on the other side of the wall, by pulling back from a point and selecting the power and angle of your shot, Bow Man is a nice time waster.

Old School Special Effects

January 30th, 2004 No comments

Nothing like digging around in the garage and finding what appears to be a “pickled dragon”. Thought to be created as a hoax around the end of the 19th century, the dragon is thought to be made of a type of rubber, or maybe even wax. The detail on the dragon is pretty amazing though.

How To: By You

January 14th, 2004 No comments

Intresting little site I stumbled across today. The site says this ” sociological project is about the study of knowledge among human society and how it can differ and change.” Basically, every once in a while a new topic is posted, such as How to: Tip at resturants or How to: Cook spaghetti. After the new topic appears, you give your two cents on how the task is done. There are no right or wrong answers. You are encouraged to have fun, or if you want, follow the topic.

Internet Fanatics Aren’t Geeks

January 14th, 2004 No comments

The typical Internet user ? far from being a geek ? shuns television and actively socialises with friends, a study on surfing habits says.

I wouldn’t say that I shun TV, but I like the fact that someone has figured out that internet users socialize with friends. I think I have more “current” friends that are only then I do in real life. I haven’t met my neighbors in the house we’ve been in for close to 2 years, but I have friends in the UK, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, and all over the US.

“Pics Of Men In Wet Pants”

April 9th, 2003 No comments

Website hits are good.

Website hits from being the 8th link returned on a search for “pics of men in wet pants” don’t really fall into the “good” category.

Gotta love the internet.

Wireless Is Boston

March 12th, 2003 No comments

Interesting little read on Wired.com. Free Wireless on Newberry Street tells of a local business owner who has wireless internet for most of the street that his shop is on for the use of customers and visitors to the area. In exchange for the service, users have to deal with a popup every few hours. That sounds better than some of the ISPs out there, although I don’t see myself hoofing it to Boston for some free surfing.

To check out the network, you can hit NewburyOpen.net.

Dot Com Morons

March 8th, 2003 No comments

So, you find a domain you want to buy, but you can’t quite get it because even though it’s expired, the registrar hasn’t released it yet. Even though the “subscription” has expired, it won’t be released so the company that is responsible for registering it for the users out there can try to charge someone to “buy it as soon as possible” for an added fee. So, instead of using that fee, you decide to wait. And wait. And wait…

Then, when the domain becomes available, you find that is has been snagged by one of the many domain squatting companies out there trying to make a buck off of the sale of said domains. Sites like this who have the odacity to complain about the registrars being anti-competative by cheating other companies, such as said squatters, out of the apparent $688 minimum to get the domain. Is it me or does this sound like organized chaos to anyone else? After seeing the site yesterday that sold eBay user names, I thought I’d seen just about every “legal” way of trying to milk the customers out there.

And people wonder why new companies end up with names such as PurpleDottedWoodpecker.com.

Dante Is A Daddy

October 23rd, 2002 No comments

If you chuckle a bit when you read today’s Angst Technology, then you’ve probably played one of the best point and click titles available. The company working on the next version of the classic has gone under, but word is that Lucas Arts is still pushing it. Hopefully Sam and Max 2 will show up eventually.

The Pop vs. Soda Page

October 2nd, 2002 2 comments

Probably one of the largest language differences in the US is how we refer to ‘carbonated beverages’. Some call it Coke, others pop, and still others refer to it as soda. This page shows that whichever you use, you are probably surrounded by those who call it the same thing.

I’m On PlanetQuake?

September 5th, 2002 1 comment

Decided I would Google myself and dig around and find references to my online persona, Smikwily. I was a little surprised to find a reference to me on the almighty PlanetQuake. Someone had asked why drive up ATMs had braille on them. This is the answer I gave them:

I actually heard the reason for this on a local radio station here in Columbus Ohio. A large majority of blind people travel by Taxi. If they need cash, the taxi takes them through the ATM. They are in the back seat, but still in a vehicle. That’s why the drive up ATMs have braille. So blind people who are traveling with other people or by Taxi can feel the keys.

There is a bit more to my response, including a G.I. Joe reference that I received bonus points for, but that sums it up. A nifty little piece of trivia for some of you folks out there.

Newseum – Frontpage To Sept. 11

August 29th, 2002 No comments

Since we are getting close to the 1 year anniversary of Sept. 11, it’s interesting to see how we reacted to the attack. I received a link to a page called Newseum in a newsletter and it’s a bit sobering. The site offers pictures of 70 front pages of newspapers from around the world. It’s one of the few sites that has brought back the feelings I had that day. Take a look and take a few minutes to reflect…

RIP: Alba, the Glowing Bunny

August 12th, 2002 No comments

It seems that Alba, the rabbit famous do to it’s ability to glow in the dark/under black light, has died. The animal was part of an experiment involving splicing the genes from a jellyfish with the rabbit to make it glow. Now, Alba is no more, but in dying, Alba may cause as much contriversy in deatha as in life. Head over to Wired
to read why some of the ‘facts’ aren’t lining up quite right.

Music from TV Commercials

August 12th, 2002 53 comments

Looking for that piece of music you heard in a commercial jingle, but can’t quite figure out what it is? Then head to Songtitle.info. They have listings for quite a few commercial jingles, as well as the discs you can find them on. Get that song out of your head and into your CD player!

Update: Received this in a recent email. May be another good site to check out: AdTunes.com
